Several interesting events are scheduled for the upcoming weeks at the Medical Center. 

Monday, May 13

Biology faculty to talk MicroRNAs, drug-induced liver injury

Dr. Damian Romero, UMMC associate professor of cell and molecular biology, will give the Department of Cell and Molecular Biology presentation, "MicroRNAs and Drug-induced Liver Injury," at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 13, in classroom 3A.

Tulane faculty to explore age-related psychiatric symptoms

​Dr. Laurie R. Earls, assistant professor of cell and molecular biology at the Tulane Brain Institute, Tulane University, will give the UMMC Neurobiology and Anatomical Sciences Seminar Series presentation, "It's the Little Things: Micro-RNAs and Micro-peptides in Age-related Psychiatric Symptoms," from noon-1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14, in room N318 (3A) on the North Wing.

Physiology professor to give TOPMed Project update

​Dr. James G. Wilson, professor of physiology and biophysics, professor of rheumatology and director of the Mississippi Center for Clinical and Translational Research, will give the UMMC Department of Physiology and Biophysics presentation, "Update on the Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine (TOPMed) Project," from 12:15-1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, May 15, in room CW308 of the Classroom Wing.

Geffen professor to note good, bad, ugly red blood cells​

Dr. Jonathan S. Jahr, professor emeritus in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, Los Angeles, California, will give the UMMC Department of Anesthesiology Grand Rounds presentation, "Red Blood Cells: Good, Bad, Ugly and Solutions," from 6:30-7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in room LH122 of the medical education building.

MEW club to discuss substance abuse treatment barriers

Dr. Kevin Freeman, associate professor and director of the Office of Medical Student and Resident Research in the Division of Neurobiology and Behavior Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, will serve as the discussion leader for the next Health Disparities Journal Club meeting, “Understanding Barriers to Specialty Substance Abuse Treatment among Latinos,” from noon-1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, in conference room D on the second floor of the student union.

1 in 100 community event to address congenital heart disease

​University Heart and Children's of Mississippi will host a free patient and family symposium, "1 in 100: Growing Up with Congenital Heart Disease," from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 8, in the Classroom Wing.

The event will include a discussion of the challenges of growing up with congenital heart disease and the important of lifelong care, a tour of the Heart Center, an echocardiogram demonstration, information about insurance coverage and interaction with heart doctors.
